The International Education Show (IES) 2018 that starts at the Expo Centre in Sharjah today is an important event, given that the higher education sector is seen as a major driver of competitiveness and job creation in increasingly knowledge-driven economies.

More than 100 educational institutions from top universities of the US, UK, Canada, Australia, Germany, India and the UAE, among others, will interact with students from January 24-26.

“The presence of some of the biggest names in the field of higher education from across the world, the wide range of programmes on offer, and the increasing number of new participants are proof of the growing popularity of the event,” said Saif Mohammed Al Midfa, CEO, Expo Centre Sharjah.

The regional governments are going the extra mile to ensure the education sector is permanently on the growth curve. For example, the UAE recently approved the national higher education strategy that aims to make the country’s universities among the world’s top 100. In terms of budgetary push, at Dh10.4 billion, more than 17 per cent of the country’s budget for 2018 has been allocated for general and higher education in the country. The UAE has also developed a higher education strategy aimed at achieving the highest scientific and professional education standards.

The education sector in the UAE, which has the highest number of international schools in the world, is expanding fast, mainly on the back of a strong primary and tertiary education segment.

“The decision to allow students to obtain work permits will help optimise the country’s human resource development and ensure accelerated growth, in the process aiding the growth of the sector in a big way” says Abdallah Sultan Al Owais, Chairman, Sharjah Chamber of Commerce and Industry and Expo Centre Sharjah.
Another important growth driver for higher education is the active interest shown by parents who plan and fund their child’s higher studies to ensure them a better future. The parents here also have the added benefit of high disposable incomes.

For students, the 14th International Education Show will be a great opportunity to explore higher education programmes in a wide variety of disciplines, the world’s topmost universities and colleges, scholarships, admission details and key information about student life in different countries.

The Great India Education Fair is being organised for the fourth consecutive time along with the International
Education Show. The largest exhibition on studying in India will feature premier Indian boarding schools, colleges, universities and higher education institutions that offer a variety of academic, professional and vocational programmes. Besides helping students gain international work opportunities, foreign language skills, and exposure to intercultural experiences, the IES 2018 will offer them a great opportunity to talk to university representatives on a one-on-one basis and get all their questions answered.

Visitors can also take advantage of seminars and workshops organised by several institutions that are aimed at facilitating spot counselling by experts and providing updates on latest educational trends and admission procedures.
